Tambobo Port’s Milestone

On June 20, 2025, the Tambobo Port in Barangay Bonbonon, Siaton, Negros Oriental, was officially inaugurated, marking a pivotal moment for the province’s economic landscape. This strategic maritime hub, situated along the scenic Tambobo Bay, is set to revolutionize regional connectivity, streamline cargo movement, and unlock new opportunities for commerce and tourism. The Negros Oriental Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NOCCI), led by President Edward Du, played a prominent role in the event, celebrating the collaborative efforts that brought this long-awaited infrastructure project to life. This article explores the significance of the Tambobo Port inauguration, its impact on trade and logistics, and its potential to transform southern Negros Oriental into a thriving economic hub.

The Significance of Tambobo Port

A Gateway to Regional Connectivity

Tambobo Port’s strategic location in Siaton makes it a vital link for inter-island trade between the Visayas and Mindanao. The port’s roll-on, roll-off (RoRo) operations, initiated with the maiden voyage of the M/V Ocean 6, enable seamless transport of goods and vehicles to Pulauan Port in Dapitan City. This connectivity addresses the logistical challenges caused by the temporary closure of the San Juanico Bridge, which had diverted large cargo trucks to Negros Oriental, causing congestion in Dumaguete City. By providing an alternative route, Tambobo Port alleviates pressure on existing infrastructure while fostering efficient trade networks.

Economic Catalyst for Siaton

The inauguration of Tambobo Port positions Siaton as a key logistics hub in the region. According to NOCCI President Edward Du, “This development will drive economic activity, attract investments, and improve access to markets across the Visayas and Mindanao.” The port’s ability to accommodate up to 30 trucks per trip ensures that goods can move swiftly, reducing transportation costs and delays. This efficiency is expected to attract businesses to Siaton, spurring job creation and boosting local commerce.

Collaborative Efforts Behind the Project

Role of National and Local Agencies

The successful launch of Tambobo Port is a testament to the collaborative efforts of various stakeholders. The Philippine Ports Authority (PPA), led by Port Services Manager Mary Louise Macalino, played a crucial role in preparing the port for operations. Last year, the PPA undertook a dredging project to deepen the channel at Tambobo Bay, allowing larger vessels to navigate safely. This effort addressed long-standing concerns about the bay’s shallow waters, which had previously limited its accessibility for inter-island vessels.

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) also contributed significantly by clearing mooring lines and shipwrecks from the bay. Lt. Marionne Abigail Enopia, PCG-Negros Oriental Station Commander, noted that scuba divers removed submerged obstacles to ensure safe passage for RoRo vessels. These efforts ensured that the port was ready for its inaugural operations, with minimal disruption to local fishing activities.

Private Sector Support

The private sector’s involvement was equally critical. E-Motion Logistics Services responded to the call for a RoRo vessel, deploying the M/V Ocean 6 to serve the Siaton-Dapitan route. Edward Du praised this partnership, stating, “This is a classic example of the private sector responding to the call of government in times of crisis.” The collaboration between public and private entities underscores the port’s potential to drive economic growth through shared commitment.

Economic and Social Impacts

Boosting Trade and Logistics

Tambobo Port’s RoRo operations are a game-changer for Negros Oriental’s logistics sector. The port’s daily runs to Dapitan facilitate the transport of goods, including agricultural products, manufactured items, and consumer goods. This connectivity strengthens supply chains, ensuring that businesses in Negros Oriental can access markets in Mindanao and beyond. The port’s capacity to handle large cargo trucks also reduces congestion in urban centers like Dumaguete, improving overall traffic flow and quality of life for residents.

Opportunities for Tourism

Beyond trade, Tambobo Port holds immense potential for tourism. Siaton’s proximity to natural attractions, such as Apo Island and the Balanan Lake, makes it an ideal gateway for tourists exploring southern Negros Oriental. The port’s enhanced connectivity could attract more visitors, boosting local businesses such as hotels, restaurants, and tour operators. By positioning Siaton as a tourism hub, Tambobo Port contributes to the province’s goal of diversifying its economy.

Community Benefits and Livelihoods

Siaton Mayor Fritz Diaz, who is also the vice governor-elect of Negros Oriental, emphasized the port’s role in creating livelihood opportunities. “With Tambobo Port fully operational, it will spur economic activity and provide jobs for our constituents,” he said. The port’s operations are expected to generate employment in areas such as port management, logistics, and ancillary services. Additionally, the influx of economic activity could lead to infrastructure improvements, further enhancing the quality of life in Siaton.

Challenges and Future Prospects

Overcoming Initial Hurdles

The journey to operationalize Tambobo Port was not without challenges. Previous attempts to develop the port were stalled due to political and environmental concerns. However, the concerted efforts of the PPA, PCG, and local government overcame these obstacles, demonstrating the power of collective action. The port’s limited preparation time was another hurdle, but the PPA’s commitment to deploying manpower and security personnel ensured a smooth launch.

Future Expansion Plans

Looking ahead, stakeholders are optimistic about Tambobo Port’s potential for growth. Plans to establish a permanent PPA office at the port will enhance operational efficiency. Additionally, further dredging and infrastructure upgrades could enable the port to accommodate larger vessels and fastcrafts, expanding its capacity for both cargo and passenger transport. These developments would solidify Tambobo Port’s role as a regional maritime hub, attracting more shipping lines and investors.

How Businesses and Communities Can Leverage Tambobo Port

Opportunities for Local Businesses

Local businesses in Siaton and nearby areas can capitalize on Tambobo Port’s operations by tapping into new markets. Entrepreneurs in agriculture, retail, and manufacturing can use the port to export goods to Mindanao, while importers can benefit from faster and more cost-effective deliveries. NOCCI encourages businesses to explore partnerships with logistics providers to maximize the port’s potential.

Community Engagement and Support

Community involvement is key to sustaining Tambobo Port’s success. Residents can support the port by advocating for its continued development and participating in related economic activities. NOCCI is also working to identify holding areas for trucks, ensuring smooth operations and minimizing disruptions to local communities.

The inauguration of Tambobo Port marks a new chapter for Negros Oriental, positioning Siaton as a vital hub for trade, logistics, and tourism. With the support of NOCCI, the PPA, the PCG, and private partners, the port is poised to drive economic growth, create jobs, and enhance connectivity across the Visayas and Mindanao. As Tambobo Port embarks on its journey, it stands as a symbol of progress and collaboration, promising a brighter future for southern Negros Oriental.
