NOCCI and Cacao Farmers Thank PNP and SEC for Their Support

The Negros Oriental Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NOCCI), together with the dedicated cacao farmers from Mt. Talinis, has expressed their sincere gratitude to two key institutions—the Philippine National Police (PNP) Dumaguete City and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Bacolod Extension Office—for their unwavering support of NOCCI’s Save Mt. Talinis Rainforest Advocacy. The partnership was particularly highlighted through the Mt. Talinis Dark Chocolate Project, a flagship initiative aimed at preserving the environment while promoting the rich cacao industry in Negros Oriental.

The Mt. Talinis Rainforest, known for its biodiversity and ecological significance, is at the heart of this advocacy. With this project, NOCCI aims to strike a balance between environmental preservation and sustainable agricultural practices that benefit local communities, especially the cacao farmers of Mt. Talinis.

A Vital Partnership for Sustainable Growth

The collaborative efforts of PNP Dumaguete City and SEC Bacolod have played a crucial role in the success of the Mt. Talinis Dark Chocolate Project. Under the leadership of PLt. Col. Don Richmond Conag, the PNP Dumaguete City has provided invaluable support by ensuring the safety and security of the farmers working in the area. Their assistance has been pivotal in fostering a conducive environment for both farming and tourism, ensuring that the project moves forward smoothly while addressing any concerns related to security and safety.

On the other hand, Director Annabelle Corral-Respall and the team at the SEC Bacolod Extension Office have provided legal guidance, helping cacao farmers navigate the complexities of establishing a sustainable business model. Their expertise in regulatory compliance has been essential in formalizing the business aspect of the Mt. Talinis Dark Chocolate Project, helping it flourish as a legitimate and profitable venture.

The Mt. Talinis Dark Chocolate Project

The Mt. Talinis Dark Chocolate Project represents a unique opportunity for cacao farmers in Negros Oriental to scale their businesses while contributing to environmental conservation. Through this project, farmers are able to cultivate high-quality cacao, which is then used to produce premium dark chocolate products. The project ties into the broader goals of sustainable agriculture, where farming practices are designed not only to be profitable but also to protect the rainforest ecosystem that surrounds the cacao farms.

By working with NOCCI, farmers in the Mt. Talinis area have access to valuable resources, training, and market linkages. These efforts are aimed at improving the quality of cacao production and ensuring that it aligns with the standards needed for the export market. The involvement of the PNP and SEC adds a layer of security and legal protection, both of which are essential for creating a successful and long-lasting venture.

Key Benefits to the Community

The collaboration between NOCCI, PNP, and SEC has brought about multiple benefits for the local community in Mt. Talinis:

  1. Economic Empowerment for Farmers: The Mt. Talinis Dark Chocolate Project provides cacao farmers with better income opportunities, improving their standard of living and ensuring financial sustainability.
  2. Environmental Protection: By promoting sustainable farming practices, the project helps in the preservation of the Mt. Talinis Rainforest, an ecologically significant area in Negros Oriental.
  3. Community Development: As part of the project, community members receive training and education on both environmental conservation and agricultural best practices, fostering a sense of ownership and pride in the program.
  4. Increased Market Access: Through NOCCI’s support, local cacao farmers have gained access to a broader market for their products, both locally and internationally.

A Call for Continued Support

In their message of gratitude, both NOCCI President Edward Du and Mt. Talinis farmers emphasized the importance of continued collaboration between local stakeholders, government institutions, and businesses in ensuring the success of the Save Mt. Talinis Rainforest Advocacy. Their joint efforts are vital in ensuring the project’s long-term sustainability and success.

“We are deeply grateful for the support we have received from PNP Dumaguete and SEC Bacolod, and we look forward to continuing our partnership in the years to come,” said NOCCI President Edward Du.

He further highlighted that the ongoing partnership exemplifies the power of public-private collaboration, which is essential for advancing community development, environmental preservation, and economic prosperity.

Future Plans and Goals

Looking ahead, NOCCI and its partners have set ambitious goals for the Mt. Talinis Dark Chocolate Project. These include expanding cacao production, increasing chocolate exports, and implementing new sustainability initiatives. Furthermore, they aim to increase awareness of the significance of Mt. Talinis Rainforest and its vital role in the broader environmental ecosystem of Negros Oriental.

With continued support from institutions like PNP Dumaguete and SEC Bacolod, as well as the dedication of local farmers, the project is poised for even greater success in the future

The Save Mt. Talinis Rainforest Advocacy, led by NOCCI in collaboration with PNP Dumaguete and SEC Bacolod, is an exemplary model of how various stakeholders can come together to protect the environment while simultaneously fostering economic growth. The Mt. Talinis Dark Chocolate Project is not only benefiting cacao farmers but is also contributing to the long-term sustainability of the region’s natural resources.

As the project continues to grow, the joint efforts of these organizations ensure that the province of Negros Oriental remains at the forefront of sustainable development and environmental protection.
