One of the advocacies of the Negros Oriental Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NOCCI) for the year 2024 is pushing for amendments to the 1987 Philippine Constitution, more specifically, removing some of its restrictive economic provisions that have for decades served as stumbling blocks to the country’s economic growth and development. In light of this initiative, NOCCI President Edward Du called for a meeting with the NOCCI Board of Trustees and Officers to discuss the proposed amendments to the economic provisions of the 1987 Philippine Constitution.
NOCCI also invited Negros Oriental Second District Congressman Manuel “Chiquiting” Sagarbarria and Atty. Felipe Claudio Remollo, in lieu of House Speaker and Negros Oriental Third District Caretaker-Congressman Ferdinand Martin Romualdez, as resource speaker on NOCCI’s proposed amendments.
Also present during the meeting were Negros Oriental Provincial Administrator Atty. Arthur Fran Tolcidas and Congressman Sagarbarria’s Chief of Staff, Atty. Neil Ray Lagahit.
The Negros Oriental Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NOCCI) has identified a key advocacy for the year 2024: advocating for amendments to the 1987 Philippine Constitution. Specifically, NOCCI aims to remove restrictive economic provisions that have long impeded the country’s economic progress. In pursuit of this initiative, NOCCI President Edward Du convened a meeting with the NOCCI Board of Trustees and Officers to deliberate on the proposed amendments to the economic provisions of the constitution.
During the meeting, NOCCI extended invitations to key stakeholders, including Negros Oriental Second District Congressman Manuel “Chiquiting” Sagarbarria and Atty. Felipe Claudio Remollo, who represented House Speaker and Negros Oriental Third District Caretaker-Congressman Ferdinand Martin Romualdez. These resource speakers provided valuable insights into the proposed amendments and their potential impact on economic development.
Also in attendance were Negros Oriental Provincial Administrator Atty. Arthur Fran Tolcidas and Congressman Sagarbarria’s Chief of Staff, Atty. Neil Ray Lagahit, underscoring the importance of collaboration between government and business sectors in driving policy reform.
The initiative to amend the constitution stems from NOCCI’s recognition of the need to address outdated provisions that hinder the country’s economic growth potential. By advocating for reforms, NOCCI seeks to create a more conducive environment for investment, entrepreneurship, and job creation.
President Edward Du emphasized the urgency of the matter, stating, “It is imperative that we address the limitations imposed by the current constitution to unleash the full potential of our economy.” Du highlighted the need for flexibility and adaptability in economic policies to keep pace with evolving global trends and opportunities.
The proposed amendments aim to remove restrictions on foreign ownership, liberalize investment regulations, and streamline bureaucratic processes to attract more investments and stimulate economic activity. These changes are crucial in enhancing the competitiveness of the Philippines and positioning it as a favorable destination for both local and foreign investors.
The meeting served as a platform for constructive dialogue and collaboration among stakeholders, fostering a shared understanding of the challenges and opportunities associated with constitutional reform. Participants engaged in robust discussions, exchanging ideas and perspectives on the potential implications of the proposed amendments.
Moving forward, NOCCI remains committed to championing the cause of constitutional reform and advocating for policies that promote economic growth and development. By fostering partnerships with government agencies, legislators, and other stakeholders, NOCCI aims to drive meaningful change and create an enabling environment for businesses to thrive.
As NOCCI continues its advocacy for constitutional amendments, the organization underscores its dedication to unlocking the economic potential of the Philippines and paving the way for a brighter and more prosperous future for all.
